SYNOPSIS • MCITP Database Administrator vs • MCITP Database Developer vs • MCTS SQL Server 2005 vs
Exam 70-431: TS: Microsoft SQL Server 2005—Implementation and Maintenance is in development.

Candidates for this exam are Professionals, typically pursuing a career as a Database Administrator, Database Developer, Business Intelligence Developer, or may be individuals who do not work with SQL Server as a part of their primary job, but wish to show their breadth of technology experience, including developers, systems administrators, etc. They have sought out knowledge and experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to enhance their technical expertise and can implement and maintain databases using specific instructions and specificatios. Candidates for this exam should have expert knowledge in the following areas:

  • Tools usage
  • UI navigation
  • Wizards usage
  • Writing code in the appropriate language (Transact-SQL, CLR Language, other scripting languages, etc.)
  • Code debugging or syntactic issue resolution
  • Troubleshooting
  • Accomplishing specific focused tasks through the use of code or UI navigation

Beginning with the release of the Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003–related exams, Microsoft requires a minimum passing score of 700 on all exams. The maximum score on the exams will vary depending on the complexity of the skills being measured. There are 50 questions and the exam last 90 minutes. The cost of this exam is $125 USD. You can take the exam at any Prometric or Pearson VUE.

The skills measured by this exam include:

  • Installing and Configuring SQL Server 2005
  • Implementing High Availability and Disaster Recovery
  • Supporting Data Consumers
  • Maintaining Databases
  • Monitoring and Troubleshooting SQL Server Performance
  • Creating and Implementing Database Objects



The Microsoft 70-431 Exam contains 40 questions and is considered to be very difficult. Most candidates will find that an exceptional amount of study time, combined with a large amount of experience, is the only way to successfully pass this exam the first time.
