SYNOPSIS • MCPD Web Developer vs
Exam 70-551: UPGRADE: MCAD Skills to MCPD Web Developer by Using the Microsoft .NET Framework is in development. It is expected to be released in its beta version in February 2006 and released in its final version toward the end of May 2006. This is a Professional Developer Upgrade Exam for those who have obtained the MCAD certification.

Candidates for this exam work on teams in medium or large development environments that use Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 Enterprise Developer or Visual Studio 2005. Candidates should have a working knowledge of Visual Studio 2005 and a sound knowledge of the new features of ASP.NET 2.0. Candidates should have at least two years of experience developing applications by using the Microsoft .NET Framework. Candidates should have at least three to four years of on-the-job experience dedicated to Web application development. In most cases, candidates will be full-time developers who develop server-side ASP.NET code that creates the browser-based, client-side interface to an application.

Candidates should have worked in the following phases of the application life cycle: technical envisioning and planning, design and development, stabilizing and releasing.

Candidates should be able to design and develop the Web interface of common business applications, such as:

  • Web-based client applications, both intranet and Internet, that may connect to data stores or middle-tier business logic
  • Data-oriented applications that provide data entry, data analysis, and reporting capabilities
  • Workflow and communication applications
  • Inventory and resource planning applications
  • Financial and accounting applications
  • Applications for the insurance and pharmaceutical industries
  • Business-to-business (B2B) applicatins
  • Business-to-customer (B2C) applications
  • Company Web sites
  • Web-based shopping cart applications

Microsoft requires a minimum passing score of 700 on all exams. The maximum score on the exams will vary depending on the complexity of the skills being measured. There are 50 questions and the exam last 90 minutes. The cost of this exam is $125 USD. You can take the exam at any Prometric or Pearson VUE.

This certification exam measures your ability to build interactive, data-driven Web-based applications with Web forms, ASP.NET, and the .NET FRamework for both intranet and Internet uses. Skills measured by this exam include:

  • Developing applications that use system types and collections
  • Embedded configuration, diagnostic, management, and installation features into a .NET Framework application
  • Improving the security of .NET Framework applications by using .NET Framework 2.0 security features
  • Implementing interoperability, reflection, and mailing functionality in a .NET Framework application
  • Implementing globalization, drawing, and text manipulation functionality in a .NET Framework application
  • Creating and programming a Web Application
  • Tracing, Configuring, and deploying Applications
  • Customizing and Personalizing a Web Application
  • Implementing Authentication and Authorization
  • Creating ASP.NET Mobile Web Applications
  • Envisioning and Designing an Application
  • Designing and Developing a User Interface
  • Designing and Developing a Component
  • Designing and Developing an Application Framework
  • Testing and Stabilizing an Application
